Liberals using Taxpayer Dollars to Smear PC's

Shame on the Liberals for using taxpayer money to fund their smear campaign. This is a re-post from the CBC blog...

* T > he Lord Government has failed to take any action to clean up the Saint John Harbour.

* New Brunswick is the worst province in the Maritimes for climate change emissions according to a 2006 Report Card on Climate Change Action by the Conservation Council of New Brunswick.

* New Brunswick has no climate action plan, despite public consultations completed in 2003.

* Commitments to environmental protection made in the 2001 provincial energy policy have not been implemented.

* According to the most recent 2005 National Pollutant Release Inventory from Environment Canada, the Coleson Cove Generating Station had S02 emission levels three times those at the Irving Oil Refinery in Saint John. According to this report, the Lord Government is the largest polluter in the Saint John area.

* The Lord Government has taken no action on the Petitcodiac River, ignoring the Environmental Impact Report.

* On June 1, 2006, the Lord Conservatives defeated a Liberal motion calling on government to introduce legislation setting out clear targets for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by December 31, 2006.

"See Austin Harvey's post below about an e-mail from a Liberal Opposition staffer. Given that this is a serious accusation, I called the Liberals for a comment. Liberal chief of staff Chris Baker says the employees still in the Official Opposition office (as opposed to on leave to work for the party) have been scrupulous about staying within the bounds and this was indeed a mistake. "It was a stupid thing to do," Baker said, "and it won't happen again." He added that he has reprimanded Jan Rowinski. "

A workers email account is taxpayers money?

Very much so! The G of NB pays for the domain for the email. Not to mention the wage of this worker who is using a work email on taxpayer time to slime the PC party. Totally inapropriate and miss use of goverment ressources.

And then, of course, there is Section 27 of the Civil Service Act which states:

27.1(1) No person who is a deputy head or an employee shall

(b) engage in any form of political activity during working hours, or

(c) at any time engage in a political activity in a manner or to an extent that could result in a perception that the person is not fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of the person's position impartially or effectively or that otherwise could cause the person not to be in compliance with the oath taken under section 22.

Uh, being a civil servant is a political activity. Do you really think civil servants can't or don't ever send emails that are not 'work related'? Who is living in la la land.

Uh, Anon, being a civil servant is not a political activity. Just because you work for an organization (government) that derives its existence through political competition, that does not mean you are, or should be, poltical yourself.

New Brunswick's civil service is an exceptional organization of hard-working people who are all trying to contribute to the good of the province. There are also other people embedded within the employ of government who act as ministers' aides and in other advisory roles (like the Liberal staffer who screwed up). Those people are not civil servants as defined in the law, but they are still prevented from using the resources of government (or, more importantly in this case the Legislature).

I believe Jan Rowinski may have lost his job after the Liberal Government was sworn in. Can anyone out there verify this. His name and position have completely disappeared from the Liberal Web site.
